The chapel of the Bones is situated by the church Igreja de Sao Francisco in the town of Evora, Portugal, where I was last month. A special place!!! The walls and pillars of this chilling chamber are entirely covered in the bones of more than 5000 monks. During the 15th and 16th centuries, there were 42 monastic cemeteries in town which took up much-needed space. The Franciscans' neat solution was to move all the remains to one compact, consecrated site. The intention was to induce contemplation and instill a proper sense of morality in the spirit of any Jesuit monk. There is a legend on the door that says "Ns ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos" - which roughly translated means "We bones that are here, await yours."...
