Originally built as a dirt strip emergency landing site by the Navy in 1943, what is now the Ramona Airport was transferred to the county of San Diego in 1956.The Ramona Air Attack Base was established in 1957 by the then California Division of Forestry, making it the oldest Air Attack Base in the Department’s system. Ramona also serves as home to a number of aviation businesses and a flight school, and is home to probably the star attraction, “Six Shooter”, a 1967 Cavalier-built F-51D Mustang II. Cavalier produced Mustangs built to the P-51D spec which were typically exported to foreign countries.
