The Daniel O’Connell Monument in Dublin Ireland overlooks the River Liffey from the south end of O’Connell Street. O’Connell was the acknowledged political leader of Ireland’s Roman Catholic majority in the first half of the 19th century and his tireless work lead to the Catholic Emancipation of 1829. At the base of the monument are four-winged victories representing courage, fidelity, patriotism, and eloquence. The Monument itself is peppered with bullet holes; it sits about a half block south of the General Post Office which was the command post for Irish rebel forces and site of heavy fighting during the 1916 Easter Rising that proved to be the catalyst for the eventual emergence of the Irish Free State in 1922.
