A hummingbird built a nest in the artificial tree that sits in an alcove at the front door to our house - we've blocked access to our front door since early February and have been coming and going via the garage. The room where our desktop sits has a large window that overlooks the nest from about 8 feet away and what started as a pale blue kidney-bean shaped egg has transformed into a rapidly growing youngster that's maybe 75% as large as mom right now. Mom feeds the kid, then sits for a minute or two before flying off, typically returning in 15 minutes or so for another feeding session. Now that the kid is large and exercising his rapidly growing wings more and more I finally took the D500 and VR70-200/2.8 and quietly opened the front door, wedged the screen door open with a foot enough to have a gap to shoot through and ran off about a dozen shots. We purposely never approached the nest and this is the closest we've been, maybe 5 feet but also partially concealed. Now that we've got the picture we're content to sit back and wait for junior to take flight.
