Let me tell you a story.
At the start of 2020, we heard that the snows in the Peruvian highlands have melted as a result of global warming.
We decide to go there and prepare our 4X4 for the expedition, without forgetting the D850 and two zooms. :-)))
When we arrive at Paso San Fransisco to cross northern Chile, the border is closed. The customs officers tell us about the confinement of which we do not know anything. We retire to lunch in a place protected from the wind, and this vicuña appears against a mountain background.
Later, we stayed at altitude, but the police brought down the Andeanists present from the mountain.
We rented a cabin and waited several weeks
to be able to return home one thousand two hundred kilometers further south.
The vicuña (Vicugna vicugna)very rarely spelled vicugna, its genus name)[3][4] is one of the two wild South American camelids which live in the high alpine areas of the Andes, the other being the guanaco, which lives at lower elevations. Vicuñas are relatives of the llama, and are now believed to be the wild ancestor of domesticated alpacas, which are raised for their coats. Vicuñas produce small amounts of extremely fine wool, which is very expensive because the animal can only be shorn every three years and has to be caught from the wild. When knitted together, the product of the vicuña's wool is very soft and warm. The Inca valued vicuñas highly for their wool, and it was against the law for anyone but royalty to wear vicuña garments; today, the vicuña is the national animal of Peru and appears on the Peruvian coat of arms.
