The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park encompasses over 900 square miles, mostly in eastern San Diego County but with small parcels in both Imperial and Riverside Counties. The park takes its name from 18th century Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and borrego, a Spanish word for sheep. These Penninsular Bighorn Sheep were grazing in a small meadow along State Highway S-22, the major entry to the park from the west, and made a total mess of Saturday traffic as folks stopped to gawk and shoot along the narrow, shoulderless section of two lane road where the sheep chose to dine.
