A few years before their retirement, an SR-71 went on static display at the 1987 MiraMar Naval Air Station Air Show. The aircraft departed Monday morning following the weekend show, but not before doing a couple of low level fly-bys. The prime spot was about midway down the main runway on the base (which was not open to us members of the general public) where the pilot rolled about 45 degrees and lit both afterburners, producing a large flame from each engine outlet. Had to shoot from a freeway overpass off the base near the east approach to the main runway.
