The White Mountains here in California lie on the east side of the Owens Valley, opposite the Sierra Nevada range to the west, and are home to two significant groves of Great Basin bristlecone pine trees, one of three long-lived and hardy species. The Methusaleh Grove contains Methusaleh, the oldest know bristlecone at over 4800 years - the exact tree is not identified in order to discourage vandals. Higher up toward the summit of White Mountain lies the Schulman grove, home to the Patriarch, the largest known bristlecone. Here are shots of a bristlecone on the way up to Schulman and the Patriarch, the wide, bushy tree.
