The Pigeon Point Lighthouse, off California Highway One between the towns of Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, has alerted 19th century and early 20th century ships and their crews to the treacherous waters defining this portion of the Pacific coast. Shown in this photograph is the "oil building." The lighthouse has witnessed the evolution of power sources: originally with a lamp that burned refined lard oil (pig fat), then mineral oil (kerosene), and finally electricity in 1926. The lighthouse has weathered poorly. The California Park system speculates that restoration of the entire facility will take about 10 years to complete. Aperture Priority Exposure. Pattern Metering. Post-Processed to mimic the appearance of an Edward Hopper painting.
