The Pigeon Point Lighthouse, off California Highway One between the towns of Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, has alerted 19th century and early 20th century ships and their crews to the treacherous waters defining this portion of the Pacific coast. The lighthouse has weathered poorly. Cast iron was used instead of steel, which absorbs water rather than repelling it like steel. The entire superstructure is severely corroded as are the binding ring bands at the base of the tower. A section of belt course shown in this photograph detached from the tower resulting in the tower being closed to public tours. The California State Park system speculates that the entire superstructure will have to be replaced and that the restoration of this facility will take about 10 years to complete. Aperture Priority Exposure. Pattern Metering.
