The Pigeon Point Lighthouse, off California Highway One between the towns of Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, has alerted 19th century and early 20th century ships and their crews to the treacherous waters defining this portion of the Pacific coast. It is still in use though completely automated now and absent from the lantern room the 1000-watt Fresnel - pronounced fraynal - lens composed of 1008 hand-fitted and polished lenses and prisms capable of producing, when electrified, 500,000 candlepower of illumination. The lighthouse has witnessed the evolution of power sources: originally with a lamp that burned refined lard oil (pig fat), then mineral oil (kerosene), and finally in 1926 electricity and two 1000-watt lamps. Only one lamp at a time was used, however; if it was "sensed" that a lamp was going to "burn-out," a device would rotate the second lamp in its place. Aperture Priority Exposure. Exposed at EV -1.33. Pattern Metering.
