While waiting for the Milky Way to rise above the horizon at 13,500 feet, the Southern Cross makes a brief appearance at the lower right of the image. Keck II is testing its laser. The laser is used to measure atmospheric disturbances so that the 36 hexagonal mirrors that make up the 10 meter mirror can be individually adjusted to minimize any anomalies.
