We do live in a migration path for these birds despite our high desert environment. Twice a year we get a chance to see the cranes, when finding five hundred overnighting is a big number. In March 2019 my wife and I were running our dogs in our Adobe badlands at the base of the Grand Mesa and heard sandhills overhead. We commented that there were large groups circling for a landing, and they just kept coming! We knew the next day would be spectatular. Filled with excitement, my wife checked our local craniac website and found estimates to be in the 3,000 range. We were primed for a late morning outing to capture some good images. These are two of the many fields the birds occupied. Pictures to follow. The lens was a Nikkor 200-500 f5.6.
