It was afternoon before I reached the turnoff to the Sunrise area at Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. All morning long, the overcast skies were projecting nice even soft light into the forests along the main highway. My hopes of the continuing light conditions when I reached the old-growth forest of the national park quickly were over when the sun began breaking through the overcast skies. When one photographic composition closes, if open to seeing, another will arise.

The sun began projecting beams of light throughout the forest, making areas of darkness and light. Due to the high contrast nature of the scene, by the time I exposed for the sunbeams shining on the trees, the remaining forest was cast into nearly complete darkness. In the development of these images, I emphasized the contrast between light and dark, creating low-key photographs of the trees in the shade of the forest.
