The Abu elephant sanctuary was established in Botswana to reintroduce domesticated elephants (primarily zoo and circus elephants) back into their native habitat. Each elephant is assigned a handler to help it acclimate back into the wild. The vast majority of elephants are successfully reintroduced into local herds of wild elephants. This photograph shows Cathy, an older female elephant, and her handler on a walk through a local stream. While Cathy has adopted several young elephants, she chose not to leave the Abu herd.
