On a drive through Etosha National Park, we came upon a pack of black backed jackals devouring a springbok. Unfortunately, for the jackals, a spotted hyena soon appeared and fought off several jackals and eventually walked away with the carcass. I am not sure whether the springbok was killed by the jackals or by the spotted hyena. Our guide told us that spotted hyenas kill 95% of their prey and a relatively small percentage of their food is scavanged.
