The De Tomaso Pantera was the "good idea" of Lee Iacoca then of the Ford Motor Company: combine a car designed by the Italian design firm Ghia for its handling with Ford's 351-cid V-8 for its low-end torque. The engine's high torque reduced the need for excessive gear changing at low speeds, making the Pantera less demanding to drive in urban areas. As with most Italian cars of the day, rust-proofing was minimal and the quality of fit/finish on early models was poor. Ford then increased its involvement in the production of the later cars with the introduction of precision stampings for body panels resulting in improved build quality. Normal program, aperture priority.
