I genuinely admire the tack sharp, fiercely detailed, specimen portraits that grace the better magazines and field guides. However, among the photos I make that I find most satisfying are candid, often less perfect images in which the subject; be it bug, bird, beast, or rarely, a human being, is shown immersed in the midst of whatever habitat evolution has allowed him to occupy. And/or some activity he employs to thrive therein. This little Lincoln’s Sparrow, concealed in his thicket of freeze-dried weeds, is an example.
