The monsoon is a seasonal wind that carries warm moist air north and west from the Gulf of Mexico into the American Southwest. The storms are a result of this moisture being forced into the thinner, colder air above the Arizona highlands. The lightning they produce generates enormous amounts of energy that we are just beginning to comprehend --including electric fields as strong as 50 kV/m —that’s hundreds of millions of volts over a distance of multiple miles:
