If you don't mind risking wet feet, this large, slow-flying, widespread, damselfly will be easy to add to your gallery. Except for parts of the extreme Pacific Northwest, American Rubyspots are generally common on riverbanks across the entire country where they favor perches on overhanging vegitation. West of the Rockies, they overlap with a very similar species, the Canyon Rubyspot (Hetaerina vulnerata). Without capture, distinguishing between the two can be somewhat challenging.
