Once mounted to the tripod, you cannot simply loosen and unlock the collar to lift out the lens/camera kit as you might on a traditional collar. Instead, you are obliged to dismount from the tripod head, then remove the collar completely. This in turn means, if you shoot hand-held without the collar, those recessed rivets are exposed. Time will tell whether this is more than a minor nuisance, as your hand will tend to be more naturally placed toward the front of the lens where the zoom ring is positioned. It appears Tamron opted to design the collar with the intention that it remain on the lens more often than not, obliging most users to rotate it up and around for hand-held use.
