The smaller the bird, the more difficult to capture any movement like this. I used the 51-point focal area on the Nikon D7100, and using a tripod, set the main focal point on the feeder (otherwise the camera would focus on the background 99% of the time), favoring more focal space to the right or the left of the feeder. I could only hope the bird would fly in from the longer side of the focal area to have a better chance of getting a cool wing position in reasonable focus. I needed bright sunlight (no flash with burst mode) to use a higher shutter speed (2000-4000) and f-stop higher then 6.3. I tried not to put the ISO higher than 1200 if needed to avoid too much "noise". A cloud could ruin a photo cause that would throw off the manual settings I used. And the birds came & went very fast, so it took 3-4 months to get a few good shots over time. I'm always open to any suggestions that could improve on this technique.
