Inspired by our fearless backyard scrub jay, steps:
Throw the lamp base on a potters wheel using cone 6 porcelain clay.
Dry slowly until leather hard, then underglaze the base with electric blue.
Bisque fire.
Sponge away the kiln dust, then do a life drawing of the bird using fine tipped underglaze applicators.
Clear glaze with zinc free clear, then final fire at cone 6.
Cut 4 trapezoids of double thickness window glass, and frost the panels with 60 grit diamond pads.
Paint 3 of the panels with Reusche glass paints (mixed with gum Arabic), firing each layer of color separately in a glass kiln at 1475 degrees, annealing slowly at 960 degrees - four firings to color these panels.
Leave one panel frosted (without color) for a brighter reading light option.
Clean panels with acetone, smooth edges with diamond pads, then foil with 7/32" copper strips.
Align the panels with electricians tape, tack solder with 60% tin/40% lead solder, then final solder all seams.
Clean shade well with acetone.
Weld together a brass ring and 4 posts to make the "spider" which will insert into the top frame.
Bevel cut, rout, seal, and drill strips of purple heart (Peltogyne paniculata) hardwood, insert the "spider" prongs, attach this assembly to top of shade.
Insert socket with LED bulb into top of base, run wire out through a drill hole in the back of the base, add plug.
Attach 6.5" heavy duty harp to the socket.
Set shade on the harp, finger tighten the finial.
Rotate the shade to the frosted pane for a brighter reading light.
