27 Nov 2014 Lomcevak said:I focused on the detail (craters and the terminator) using AF, then switched the lens to manual so the focus didn't change. Used mirror lockup and tripped the shutter with a cable release after about 5 seconds or so. Heavy duty Gitzo tripod and Wimberley head.
Also, shot a few different exposures in Manual to find one that retained highlight detail and let the shadows/darker areas fall where they may. This was shot in SD picture control, but lately I've been shooting high contrast surf shots (surfers in black wetsuits riding waves with white water) and am becoming a big fan of the Flat setting in the D810. I'll be trying it on the moon next.

Full moons offer dramatic discs, but details are more prominent during partial moon phases with oblique sun angles on the surface.
