Hell Spitter is a 1 1/2 Pounder Cannon, a French 1740-1760 swivel gun design, mounted on a field carriage which belongs to R.E. Piland, a prominent Jeweler at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. It is the smallest sized cannon which was considered to be a military weapon, not a signal gun. It is fired at nominally 7:00 PM to indicate the end of the day at fair. The command to fire is given when ordered by the King from his location at the Pub Sing at the White Hart Tavern. The preparatory command is given by two soundings of a bell in quick succession, repeated for a total of three pairs of rings. The command "Fire in the Hole" is then given at the White Hart and relayed to the gun crew. When the command arrives the gunner lights a match (a quick match if I'm lucky so that I can see it sparkle in the dark) and then moves it up and then down in a 180 degree arc to touch the touch hole to fire the piece. If it is dark enough and the gunner is not experienced, it can take some seconds to find the touch hole.
