This fall foliage photograph was made on September 30, 2011, with a Nikon D700 and a Nikon 16-35mm f/4 lens at 19mm focal length, 1/50 second shutter speed and f/16 aperture. The ISO was set at 200, and there was a Nikon circular polarizer on the lens. The location is the shore of Harrisburg Lake in the town of Hadley, in upstate NY, USA within the Adirondack State Park.
I was simply riding around the area where I live searching for colorful fall foliage. This was an especially good year and the weather had been cooperative. Each year I produce a calendar with a selection of 13 of my favorite photographs from my travels that year. This one will be the month of October for 2012.
The most significant technical problems were in capturing the full depth of field and in preserving the delicate definition of the spectacular clouds and their reflections while bringing out the brilliant colors in the foliage. I was able to get the full depth of field using the 16mm lens at 19mm and f/16. the post processing with adjustments in Photoshop CS5 using several Curves and Hue & Saturation layers with masks resulted in the detail and striking colors of the image. The final step was in a very modest sharpening.
