While the scene is very appealing, it does not photograph well with just ambient light. So we set out to see how it would look using the Nikon CLS system with two SB-900 flashes set on remote, using the D90 pop-up flash in commander mode.
In this fifth frame, we have adjusted, from the camera, for the second flash behind the log (Group B) to 1/16th power, allowing an additional stop of light from the flash. The interior of the length of the log is more visible, creating a more natural, sunlit appearance while the first flash is still at the same power ratio (1/64th), pointed at the falling water and shadowed area under the log. This scene is a close to 'balanced' in regards to the lighting ratio between ambient light and the two flashes.
