Making several exposures with wider and narrower zoom settings would allow you to get different "looks" for the subject. Was this hand held? Panning with a tripod can give you better control of how the background will look in night shots like this.

I think that a wider zoom setting to show more of the shore lights would have added more interst to this one.

Yes, this was handheld, I did not carry the tripod and the ship was moving.
