I can see where moving to your left to get a smooth background would have negatively impacted the lighting on the owl, at least to some degree, but wonder if you were able to try that angle at all. That Nikkor 200-400 f4 lens lived up to it's billing here.

I've never truly appreciated great wildlife shots, like this one, until I started taking ones of my own. For some reason, animals just don't dig having people creeping up on them with large metallic objects in their hands. Go figure!
