Where Bermuda Grass grows, you will find Fiery Skippers. Therefore, they are reliably urban butterflies. In the summer months, they range up the Mississippi watershed as far as Illinois and Ohio but the Fiery Skipper is native only in the West and Southwest below 3000 feet. Since the oldest sightings in the US date from the mid-1930s, the species seems to represent a relatively recent expansion from a larger genus inhabiting Andean South America. Bermuda Grass is their reproductive host plant but for food, they seek common garden flowers such as Verbena, Zinnias, Marigolds and especially, Lantana. Skippers tend to be active and easy to find but be prepared to quickly frame, focus and fire the shutter —they do not pose for long.
