Atlantis Fritillaries are generally forest dwellers, roughly scattered across the northern half of the USA, as far south as Virginia in the East and Northern Arizona in the West. They are common in some areas, almost absent in others. The genus (Speyeria) is easily recognized but in the field, distinguishing Fritillary species one from another can be challenging. Their taste for nectar is broad; including common milkweed, mints, mountain laurel, crown vetch, and burdock. Where it grows, blooming Bergamot will draw a crowd --both of butterflies and butterfly photographers.
