I received a Nikon 55mm f/2.8 MF Micro for Christmas and have tried it out a few times. This winter has been very mild in the Seattle area so not only the crocuses have come out early but also the cherries and also magnolias. It gets cold in the evenings but the days are unseasonably warm. I noticed a bee or wasp hiding in the flowers of a Magnolia Starlota and thought I would try my luck at some insect photography. This wasp never flew away and was very slow allowing my slow camera skills to not hinder the shot too much. I used a monopod with on camera flash. I would set the focus and then slowly rock the monopod forward and backward trying to get the eyes in focus, trying to keep myself stable, adjusting the head when necessary. I might try the same shot with the SB-600 tied to the on camera flash, maybe tuning each of them down to get a softer light. The manual focusing takes some getting used to but I am beginning to use the LiveView as it solves dealing with glasses…LOL. D300, 55mm with extension tube, on camera flash, f/8, ISO 254 In the second one the focus is not quite there, but I love the look of the face. Quite the evil looking wasp. D300, 55mm with extension tube, on camera flash, f/16, ISO 254 Conclusion, I love this lens. I originally had some difficulty with a problem lens, but this replacement has been great. I love getting back into the MF lens again. I have not quite got the intricate photos I see from many of you but I saw enough to keep me coming back!
