Killdeer will lay their eggs in gravel areas. This pair of Killdeer have 4 grey / black spot, uneven shaped eggs. The nest is at the edge of a church parking lot. Seems that they were looking for an extra level of protection. When the nest is approach the sitting bird will attempt to draw the intruder away from the nest. The bird may display an "injuired bird" behavior to further draw attention away from the nest.
