I cannot believe my luck! Today I went to Vasona Lake to to see what I could shoot with my 300mm EDIF f/4 AFS lens and teleconverters, and found some of my favorite areas of the lake had been drained. So I explored a few new areas and took a few pictures, but decided to leave after about 1 1/2 hours. So I packed my tripod in the trunk and put my D700 with the 300 mm and a 2x teleconverter still attached in there too and headed out of the park. As I came to a turn, a Great Blue Heron landed just off the side of the road. I saw a parking place a little ahead, so I pulled in grabbed the camera and lens from the trunk, leaving the tripod packed as I was afraid he would take off again and started shooting hand held! What am I nuts? The bird was more intent in getting accross the road and didn't take much heed of me as I was still far away. I kept shooting and moving closer, just as he passed in front of me I got off this full frame FX shot and a few others. To my surprise when I looked at it later it was sharp. Shot HAND HELD D700 with 300 mm f/4 EDIF AFS lens and Nikon 2.0 IIE Telextender mounted for 600mm equiv. f/10, 1/400, ISO 400.
