Here is a rather funny old chap who is sculpted into the front wall of the 10th century church in Fabbrica di Peccioli, Tuscany. He is only perhaps 30cm (12ins) tall and is located ankle high at the bottom of the main entrance steps. Look closely and you will see he is wearing medieval clothing and is dancing while waving his oversized right hand at people arriving at the church. It was typical of this era for the builders to carve such jesters to represent a disliked bishop, accentuating and distorting their facial features (in the original I can just make out what appears to be a distorted mouth and buck teeth). The medievals were quite superstitious, so it is possible that this article of ridicule was put there to scare away perceived evil spirits.
