In 1913, the schooner Adventuress sailed from Maine to the Bering Sea via the Straits of Magellan in search of Arctic specimens. She then served the San Francisco Bar Pilots as a Pilot Vessel until 1952, waiting offshore in the notoriously rough weather outside the Golden Gate.
