A short bus drive from Goritsy is Kirrilov where the Monastery of St. Cyril on the White Lake is located. This monastary was founded in 1397 and by the 17th Century was one of the richest. Acording to Insight Guides, Vasily III the tsar of Russia in the early 1500s came here to pray for a child by his apparently barren wife. The following year she bore him a son who became Ivan the Terrible.
